PS3 Recovery Menu Discovered!

JordanBlack68 has found something interesting on the latest 2.50 firmware update. Apparently Sony has snuck in a PS3 recovery menu with the latest update.

To go into this mode you need at least firmware 2.50 and do the following:
  • Place your PS3 in STANDBY mode
  • Hold the power button until you hear 2 beeps.
  • If it goes into the video reset setting then you messed up, and do it again till you hear a double beep.
Here is a video of this in action (video by super-6-1):

There is also another (better quality) video uploaded by 1ra2 (Just skip to the ending to see the recovery menu):

The menu itself might be "useless" for our purposes but it may be able to recover a PS3 from a semi-brick.

You Wish

We all wish that this would lead to something. Unless you are able to get into the recovery menu and access and external flash (flash dump on your USB drive), then chances are all it will do is help restore your PS3 from a semi-brick. From Sony's perspective this seems quite useful. Because people can recover their own bricks (in a sandbox), they can now lay off technicians to fix software bricks xD.

No, you need a higher firmware.

Seeing as the firmware option says you need 2.50 or higher, I don't see how it would downgrade anything.
