Sony has filed a patent for the cell processor to emulate the Emotion Engine bringing back PS2 backwards compatibility to all PS3’s

There are two main ways to emulate hardware. Interpretation is when target code is decoded and converted into a language the host can understand. The other strategy is to decode and recompile programs in the host’s language.
Maybe the concept is better explained another way. Interpretation is like having someone constantly translating English to Japanese for you, non stop, twenty four hours a day wherever you go. Decoding and recompiling is like someone translating a sets of words and putting them in a dictionary you can reference.

Maybe we will see backwards compatibility in upcoming 3.0 firmware update.

Shoot! I hope so that it is included in the upcoming 3.00FW. That update would bring my 45+ PS2 game collection out from storage.

Now... One question I have is...

Isnt there some hardware in the 20, 60, 80GB PS3's that give them there PS2 Compatiblity?

The Reason I ask is because I was told several times, an I mean SERVERAL times from PS3 Techs an Sony Techs alike. That there is hardware diffrences an that if I wanted to play PS2 games on my PS3 that I would have to buy a compatible PS3.

LOLOL! Mabe I should have read the article before commenting. LOLOL

Ok its all cleared up on my end, but goes to show you that all the Techs I talked to were... Half right in the sence that there is hardware diffrences in the PS3 Models but not when it came to me not being able to ever play PS2 games on my 40GB PS3 they were DEAD WRONG.

LOLO Yes Cant wait for this to happen.

Oh an one more thing wasnt it stated that the newest PS3 FW 2.80 was just a minor update to make some games run better an to PREPAIR for a BIG UPCOMING update?

I dont recall where I might have read this but I could also be wrong.

This would be good (especially if HDD backup loader works). However I seriously doubt we will see an emulator anytime soon, Although it would be a good reason to upgrade even with the open remote play block.

fYI it wont be in frimware 3.0 i can tell you that 100%

Nice. There's a few PS2 games I've really been wanting to play. I'll hope we get backwards compatibility sometime soon.

I'd be so mad dude! Why would I pay more money for a PS3 when all PS3's can play them with this if it's coming in 3.00 or maybe a new PS3 model?

    7. RichB93's Avatar RichB93 says:

Awesome; there are some classics I want to play and I dont have a PS2 so this is great news. Unfortunately as Jorg said Sony will more than likely drag their feet about this one and we won't be getting it anytime soon.

The PS3 is already emulating the EE chip.
All EU PS3s don't have the EE chip in them so EE was emulated in all EU 60GBs.
This is nothing new, the problem with new PS3s is that the GS was also removed so in order to run PS2 games they have to emulate the GS chip.

    9. maxximuscool's Avatar maxximuscool says:

This news is not new, since the EE have always been emulated by the Cell Cpu on PAL 60G models even since. Those BC PS3 can play almost every single games of PS2 because of the GS was built inside the mainboard. But for the 40G and the new 80G or the mighty 160G doesn't have any of those chip. So to get it to do BC is going to be a tough job, Sony will have to fully write an emulator that convert the RSX GPU to be PS2 GS or by using Cell CPU emulation. Which is a daunting task to be done, and SONY will never let the cheapy made PS3 to do full BC like the original PS3 does. That meant people who owned a PS2 will have to update the firmware that would support the PS2 BC and download game from PSN and pay for it just like what they do with MAPS/ Tekken 5 DR for PS3. Which obviously meant they they cannot play from PS2 DVD that is.

:-) sorry to disappointing all the 40G,80G, 160G PS3 owner but this is the nature of marketing work.

They spent countless hours to write the emulations and millions of dollars on hiring developers, they would never let their moneys gone to waste for the sake of customer satisfactions. If you want BC then you'll have to play for the Games and download it upto 5times from PSN store.

Glade Sony made the 20G, 60G, and old 80G models. Gotta love those limited Edition consoles. Must take good care of those original consoles, else you'll regret it lol

"The issue of backwards compatibility on the PS3 console is dead and buried, as far as John Koller is concerned. SCEA's director of hardware marketing recently nailed down the final coffin on the issue in a recent interview with Ars Technica.

"It's not coming back, so let me put that on the table," said Koller when asked about backwards compatibility. He also added that despite what people may think, backwards compatibility isn't really that big of a draw for the PS3.

"It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," he claimed. "We've got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They're buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies."

Well that sucks, I'm really in the mood to play through the PS2 GTA games.. A PS2 is only $99 fortunately.
